Spray Tanning 101: Everything You Need to Know!

Sunless tanning is the only skin-safe option for getting beautiful, bronzed skin during these cold, grey months. Although the process of getting a spray tan is incredibly simple & quick, sometimes the pre-glow steps and aftercare can be a little more complicated. In order to ensure that all of our clients leave Schulz Beauty feeling radiant, we have broken down the most common spray tan mistakes, and how to avoid them!

Manicures, Pedicures + Waxing

These types of services should be done 24-48 hours before your Spray Tan. Oils used on your hands and feet during mani/pedi services can act as a barrier for the spray tan. Waxing/Shaving should be done the day before your spray tan, as waxing temporarily opens your pores, and if they haven’t had time to return to their normal size, the spray tan can rest in the open pores and created a textured, spotty look. Waxing with a fresh spray tan is also a bad idea, as it strips the first layer of skin and can thus remove some of your spray tan.

If you have to go for a mani/pedi after receiving your spray tan, request that no oils are used and that your hands and feet are not soaked in water, as both will wear down the tan more quickly. Also, try to avoid any exfoliation massage on your legs as that will cause the tan to fade quicker in that area.

Showering should not be done directly before your spray tan; after you have showered your skin is very dry and your pores are open (the spray tan can settle in little spots if your pores are open when getting the spray tan). The PH level of your skin has been stripped away from the soap and hot water, your pores need time to close and the natural oils of your body to return to ensure the best canvas for your spray tan.

Shampoos, conditioners and soaps can have high pH levels which can neutralize the DHA bronzing reaction, and may result in less satisfactory tanning results. Give your skin time to balance its PH levels out before having a spray tan done.

Exfoliation should be the last step in your shower to ensure any shampoo/conditioner/soap residue is exfoliated away. Using an exfoliating mitt is ideal to thoroughly prep skin, but a loofah will suffice if that’s what you have. If you are a spray tan addict, this is an especially important step in order to avoid tanning build-up. If you're coming in every 7-10 days for a fresh spray tan, remember to exfoliate as much possible. Spray tan build-up can create a scaly, “crocodile skin” look which is anything but glowing and fresh!

*We love the Dermasuri Exfoliating Mitt for our pre-tan Skin Prep, available for purchase in-store at Schulz Beauty.

Moisturizers, Perfume + Deodorant

As unpleasant as it may feel not to apply moisturizer after your shower, this is a very common mistake that can make or break the final quality of your spray tan. Moisturizers, perfumes and deodorant will act as a barrier to the development of the formula on your skin.

We understand that most days it’s a little crazy to expect you to walk around with no deodorant on, so if you must wear it to your appointment, we provide baby wipes for you to use to remove it prior to your tan.

Barrier Cream

Although we definitely just told you not to moisturize your skin before a spray tan, some exceptions do apply. If you find that you have extreme dry patches on certain parts of your skin, we provide a barrier cream that will prevent the tan from getting too dark in those areas. In this case, the oil barrier is a good thing! Most people find that their hands are the most commonly dry spots on their bodies. Not only do hands tend to be drier, they also generally have thicker, tougher skin than the rest of your body, so naturally they will develop the tan differently. It’s a good idea to apply a thin coat of barrier cream to the backs and palms of your hands if you find that they are especially dry (this is super common in the winter months). Other areas that are really dry and that can 'grab' the product more than desired- where the barrier cream can be useful before the tan - are the elbows, sides of the feet and ankles.

You may notice that we ask some pretty strange things of you in a typical spray tan appointment. Trust us, we have our reasons. Marks and creases can be made where there are folds and wrinkles in the skin. We ask you to bend slightly at the waist while spraying the backs of your legs to avoid giving you a white line where your butt creases, to keep your arms lifted until the spray tan is dry to avoid an armpit crease, and to slightly bend your fingers into a “claw” while spraying your hands to keep you from getting white knuckle lines. We might even get you to hold your breasts up or while we spray under them if necessary to ensure you have an even everywhere.

These creases and marks can be hard to blend once they’ve  set on your skin, so at the time of the appointment, if any are visible, we will wipe the area with a cloth and re-spray.

Sunburns + Tan Lines

Spray tans can help to even out minor tan lines, but for anything drastic it can be tough. Essentially, a spray tan takes whatever base colour your skin has and makes it darker and more bronzed. So it will deepen the tanned parts of your skin just as much as it deepens the light lines. Evening out larger areas is easier, but if you have lots of tiny strap lines, be prepared that a spray tan might soften their appearance but may not make them disappear.

While spray tanning over top of a tan is fine, spraying on a sunburn is not a good idea. We don’t like to do this, because as the skin inevitably begins to peel, the tan will become patchy and likely make the sunburn look even worse. Wait until your skin has calmed and you've stopped peeling before coming to see us to extend the life of your colour!

Marks and Creases

You could get some marks and creases on the parts of your body where skin touches skin. That is why we powder the insides of your elbows, behind your knees and on your neck before you leave Schulz Beauty. Unfortunately, we can only help you as long as you’re with us in the studio. Once you head home, it’ s up to you to maintain the tan while it is developing. We recommend wearing dark, loose clothing while it’s setting. You want to avoid keeping your legs crossed skin to skin for an extended period of time while your spray tan is processing. It’s also best to sleep in long pants and long sleeves to keep your skin covered while you’re asleep and unable to monitor your movements. The last thing anyone needs is a handprint in the middle of their chest from sleeping in an odd position!

Swimming, Sweating + Working Out

We know that lots of our clients love coming to get a spray tan before going on vacation. We definitely recommend getting some sunless colour so you can arrive already bronzed and glowing in your bikini, but there are a few things to keep in mind! Being in water for extended periods of time will shorten the life of your tan, so slap on that SPF and go for quick dips in the ocean for the first few days! Or just lay by the pool in all of your bronzed glory :)

We also totally love and respect the fact that you want to get straight back to spin class after getting your fresh tan, but keep in mind that lots of sweating can make your spray tan fade faster. A trick that may help is patting some baby powder on sweaty areas before working out to help keep any fading to a minimum. If you still happen to get some marks in especially sweaty places, you can use moisturizer blend them and even things out.

A lot of our clients love using our self-tanning options for touch-ups after their tan. Whether you want to extend the tan because you're on a 3 week vacation or you simply want a touchup on your face/chest (the face tends to fade fastest on the body because of the constant cleansing and washing everyday) or other body part - we sell the same solution we've used on you so you can tan yourself at home.

Vacation Essential Prep = Spray Tan

An essential before any vacation if you want to look and feel your best for your trip is scheduling your spray tan. Those first few days of stepping out into the sun, uncovered for the first time in a year, glowing brighter than the sun, can be terrifying. Let's keep the pale sparkle for Edward Cullen in Twilight and opt for a more bronzed babe look for our vacay. Also, what better excuse to go make-up-free for a while?

Benefits of getting a spray tan before your vacation:

- avoiding the attempted panic-tan as soon as you get there (read: panic-burn) in order to desperately get some colour for the rest of your trip

- look more toned and slim in your beachwear. There’s a saying in the tanning world that if you can’t tone it, then tan it. Tanning your body makes it a lot easier to skip the gym and still look amazing.

- as your spray tan gradually fades away your real sun tan can build up underneath - switching places before the end of your trip

- Spray tans are a healthier way to have a tan than sitting out and baking in the sun.  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 40 to 50 percent of all adults who reach the age of 65 will have had some type of skin cancer in their life. Spray tans offer a quick, convenient, and affordable way to tan that is also safe and effective.

- Who wants to lots of time applying makeup on a vacation? The hotel lighting is horrible and changes are you'll end up sweating most of it off during your busy day anyway. A spray tan allows you to wear less makeup and have a glowing complexion without having to fake it with makeup or worry about it rubbing off.

The gorgeous Carling of Through Her Style wrote a blog about her essential beach vacy prep and one of these steps included her easy and risk-free spray tan from Schulz Beauty. See the photo below of her natural sun-kissed glow and read all about her beach vacay prep here.

Don't forget to book your spray tan before your vacation to show up perfectly bronzed when you board the plane :)

Book online or email info@schulzbeauty.ca for your appointment (or text 647 960 3604) - sometimes we can squeeze you in if there is nothing available online!

*It's important to remember that a spray tan offers no protection from UVA or UVB rays, so you will still tan but you will also need to wear sunscreen also. Also, being in the pool or ocean all day will inevitably cause your spray tan to fade faster but hopefully the sun will be able to top it back up.*

Microblading 101

It's likely over the last 6-12 months you've heard of the phrase - microblading .. or eyebrow embroidery, semi-permanent eyebrow tattooing, etc. You may have seen a friend or colleague with some amazing brows and upon inquiry realized it was a result of their microblading procedure.

To give you a quick lesson in Microblading 101: microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic treatment using a small blade dipped in pigment to create hair-thin strokes that blend in with and enhance your natural eyebrows. Because each stroke is done by hand, the artist can create the perfect colour, density, and brow shape for each individual client. It is generally a 2-step process, and after the final touchup the client will walk away with full and natural-looking brows that will last anywhere between 1-3 years!

Check out the before and after photos to see for yourself how amazing and natural the transformation is...

Who is a good candidate for microblading?

Those needing a bit of a brow 'boost' - you might not have 'bad' eyebrows per se but you may have some patchy spots here and there.

Those that have overplucked and have irreversible results of some uneven tweezing,  or you'd like to avoid having to fill in your brows with makeup anymore.

Also those who are suffering from any hair loss that has led their brows to be very sparse or non-existent.

What can you expect at your appointment?

The first half hour is spent answering any questions you may have and deciding on the right shape and pigment color, so you will know exactly the brow shape we will be microblading before we start. We use an eyebrow pencil to draw in the preferred eyebrow shape which will act as a template to ensure the end result matches your desired shape. This first 30 minutes is also the time that we apply the numbing cream to let it set in. The next 20-30 minutes is spent drawing the actual hair strokes. The last 15-20  minutes is going over aftercare instructions and letting the pigment sit for a bit until we wipe it away and you're free to carry on with your day :)

Will it be painful?

Numbing cream is initially applied and then numbing gel is reapplied throughout the process to ensure you don't feel anything. For those that do feel something the feeling is minimal and any pain totally tolerable. Some have described it as a mild scratching sensation; having been through it myself I can say I felt nothing more than some mild pressure but of course it will vary from person to person.

What is the aftercare/downtime?

There isn't any downtime in the sense that you can go back to work and resume normal activities almost immediately.  Do note that the microbladed area will appear darker and more bold in colour for the next few days during the healing process but will lighten significantly and be softer when healed.

We will go over the aftercare in detail during the procedure but the main points are to avoid sweating for about a week after the procedure, avoid putting any product or makeup on your brows for a couple weeks. There may be some flaking or scabbing depending on the person and procedure but overall it'll be a breeze the healing process.

Kailey & Michael Wed At The Kortright Centre

We're in love with Kailey and Michael's beautiful forest wedding at The Kortright Centre. Their entire wedding took place outdoors, followed by dancing under bistro lights and featuring a bonfire with s'mores for dessert.

Lushana Bale Photography took the most beautiful images of the couple, and truly captured the soft and romantic look of the wedding.

For the makeup and hair we did loose waves and pinned it to the side to compliment the flower crown and kept the makeup fresh and glowy - focusing on the eyes and lashes with a peachy nude lip. Makeup and Hair by Schulz Beauty.

The Perfect Faux Glow for your Wedding!

24K Glow for Bride + Bridesmaid by Schulz Beauty

Now that we've reached the busy season for bridal, we're giving our brides an all natural glow for their wedding. Not only does it make brides look fabulous in a white gown, it makes their makeup application look even more glowing and gorgeous.

Here are some tips for brides wanting the perfect faux glow for the wedding day:

1) Schedule a test spray tan about a month before the wedding. This gives you the chance to test out what day you like the colour the best (i.e. some prefer the 2nd day when it's the darkest, versus other brides who prefer the colour on the 3rd day when it's naturally faded slightly). Also it gives you a good excuse to get a spray tan, whether it's for your bachelorette or for a busy weekend, showing off your spray tan is sure to make your girls envious of your glow and wanting to book their own!

2) Don't worry about anything getting on your white dress. As long as you've taken your first shower after the spray tan, the solution has sunk into your skin and any excess colour/bronzer has been washed off.

3) Choose a colour level similar to what your base colour is already. So if its in the middle of the Summer and you've been at the cottage this whole time, obviously you are going to be darker than you would be during the wintertime. If you have dark hair & eyes, you can get away with a darker tan, and those that are blond with fair skin, you'd want a hue that's a bit lighter.

4) When it comes to preserving the colour, stick to warm not super hot showers and blot dry with your towel (not rub). The moisturize generously with an oil-free moisturizer. Adhere to the proper prep and aftercare for your spray tan to ensure flawless colour on your wedding day; see the following link to all the prep and aftercare instructions here

5) Make those appointments! Nope, a month out is not too far in advance. Even if you have to change the date or time of your spray tan during the week of your wedding, now is the time to book to ensure a spot.

* bridal packages available for your bachelorette or before your wedding; bring in 4 friends and receive a complimentary 24 Karat spray tan for yourself! Make-up & hair services are available upon request.

The 5 Best Bronzers for a Spring Glow

Now that we've welcomed spring, when you are in between getting your glow tans, a great bronzer that fools everyone into thinking winter wasn't rough on your complexion tops the list of makeup bag updates. Below are our favourite liquid and powder formulas for getting a hint of natural, sun-kissed color.

Application Tips:

Bronzing Powder is used to create the illusion of sun-kissed skin. It shouldn't be used all over the face; just apply it to the areas that would be hit by the sun: the forehead, bridge of nose, tops of cheeks, and chin. Take what's left on the brush and blend onto the neck and decolleté so there is no line of demarcation.

1) Nars Bronzing Powder (Laguna/Casino)- creates the ultimate healthy glow. Diffused powders with golden shimmer create an all-over warmth or contour for the face perfect for creating or enhancing the look of tanned skin.

Use 'Laguna' for fairer skin tones and Casino for med/deeper skin tones.

2) Melanie Mills Hollywood - Gleam Body Radiance Body Radiance is the go to product for anyone who desires an instant natural glow. Not just for your face,  use this product to bronze the arms, legs, and chest. Available along with the Gleam Radiance Dust Powder in studio at Schulz Makeup & Beauty Studio.

Y ou can choose your finish, there are 4 different shades, all of which will blend in effortlessly on all skin tones.

3) MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Give Me Sun! - We love MAC's mineralize line, a luxurious slow-baked powder with 77-Mineral Complex & Vitamin E that gives a natural, dimensional finish.

Use the shade 'Medium Dark' for fair skin tones vs. GIve Me Sun for med/deeper skin tones.

4) Too Faced Soleil Matte Bronzer in Chocolate - The perfect med. toned matte bronzer. You can layer and build the colour up depending on the look you're going for (natural light glow to a deeper tan). Oh and this smells like Chocolate :)

Swipe a little Chocolate Soleil into the crease to contour and give the eyes a lift as well.

5) Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer  - A cult favourite and artist staple - this award winning matte bronzer provides natural looking colour to flatter any skin tone. Without any shine or shimmer, this matte bronzer doubles its purpose and can be used for contouring, sculpting and defining features.

Top Spray Tanning Tips

The key to a long-lasting, perfect spray tan is the prep before the spray tan and the maintenance after. Below are a few important tips on how to ensure the perfect glow:

Exfoliate the day before your spray tan

Why? Because exfoliation leads to longer lasting and even colour. The better you exfoliate pre-spray tan, the less your body will need to exfoliate afterwards, allowing your glow to last longer.

Avoid putting lotion on after you shower and before you are getting spray tanned.

Why? Moisturizer/lotion can act as a barrier and prevent absorption of DHA (the active ingredient in any sunless tanning product and what causes your skin to change colour).

Avoid wanting to be TOO dark for your current skin colour.

Why? A super dark colour might look good on your porcelain skin when you are sprayed and the first couple of days but going too dark for your skin tone could leave to uneven or patchy fading. We recommend doing a natural glow which can be built upon the next time you come for your spray tan vs. going many shades darker on your first tan.

Wait 7-8 hours before showering.

Why? The DHA needs 7-8 hours to develop, the longer you leave it on the better! Our rapid tan solution for Girls on the Go allows you to wait only 2-4 hours before showering and the colour will continue to develop/get darker up to 24 hours after showering.

Wear loose fitting clothing to the spray tan appointment, avoid tight clothing right after.

Why? Anything that rubs against your skin causes friction, that friction will inevitably rub off some of your developing tan. We want try to not disturb the tanning process as much as possible! For example, wearing tight jeans or pants may rub off some solution leaving you with a lighter colour than if you allowed the solution to fully sink in. Ideally wear cotton after your spray tan; cotton clothing allows the skin to breath which helps to prevent any moisture from sweating.

Post-Spray Tan Maintenance:

After the 8 hours, take a light warm shower. Wash with a mild shower gel and simply rinse the extra airbrush solution off the surface of your skin. Do not exfoliate your skin during this shower. Gently pat yourself dry. Do not rub yourself dry.

Shaving after your tan speeds up the exfoliation process and shortens your tan by causing your tan to start to fade. When shaving, be sure to use a fresh blade with a light touch to minimize exfoliation and extend the life of your tan.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and moisturize twice daily with a non-oily product to keep your glow tan lasting as long as possible!

Notable’s Young Entrepreneur Feature

Schulz Beauty and founder Jennifer Schulz was recently featured as Today's Notable Entrepreneur on  Notable.ca. Read the full interview here to learn more about us, here are some highlights of the interview:

Describe what you do in less than 140 characters. Go.
We make women glow gorgeous. Schulz Make-up + Beauty Studio is the first of its kind in Toronto, an intimate and glamorous place to make one feel their best.

We offer make-up, custom spray tanning and hairstyling for every occasion. We also boast Toronto’s first sunless (UV-Free) studio, providing our clients with a natural looking glow without exposure to harmful rays.

What was the inspiration for your career route?
I worked many years as a corporate accountant but my passion was always make-up and making people look and feel their best.  After receiving my CA designation I decided to go to make-up school and learn from the best. While I was living in Vancouver, I worked as an accountant full-time and was freelancing as a makeup artist and hairstylist in the evenings and weekends.

I realized that a woman shouldn’t have to wait for her big day or a special occasion to be pampered and to get her make-up done. When I moved to Toronto, after years of juggling my day-job as an accountant and evenings/weekends as a make-up artist, I decided to open my own place and Schulz Make-up + Beauty Studio was born. I wanted to create a place where women can go and be made to feel beautiful, anytime.

Also, coming from Vancouver, where there are many options to get a great spray tan, I was shocked how hard it was to find somewhere to get one in Toronto. I felt there was a need for a beautiful place to get a natural glow throughout the year, especially with the dangers of using a tanning bed.

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?

King West since there are tons of great restaurants and bars and it's on my front doorstep. Bar Buca for snacks, and the Mafalde ai Funghi Pasta at Gusto 101 is so good I have dreams about it.

What gives you the greatest FOMO?

Having to wake up super early every Saturday during the busy season for weddings (May to October) while everyone else is sleeping in.

What's your guiltiest pleasure?

White wine and trashy reality TV (hello, Real Housewives).

What’s something you wish you didn’t spend so much money on? What’s something you wish you spent more on?

Make-up! Or maybe I wish that make-up wasn’t so expensive… but it’s product testing, right?

I wish I could spend more money on travel and carving out time to get away on extended trips.

Top 2016 Bridal Hair Trends

Ballerina Buns

While the past year has been all about the loose, romantic updo, we're seeing more brides wearing their hair up in a more structured ballerina-style updo. Personally I'm a fan of having your hair up high as it's flattering and keeps the hair out of your face all day/night long (especially in Toronto's humid summer months)!

Romantic Vibes

There's been a clear trend in the last few years for looser and unstructured curls. Many of the weddings we've been a part of have common themes of romance, etherealness, and bohemian chic. Having the curls worn long and loose, with a bit of hair pulled back on both sides or only on one side gives an effortless, romantic  vibe. I personally love the look of having only one side pulled back and showcasing a beautiful clip, the look is flattering on everyone and you get the best of both worlds - hair down and away from your face. For those that want their hair down but can't quite get their hair to grow enough or would like some extra volume or length, we have hair extensions customized to your hair colour for either rental or purchase for your wedding day.

Bridal Hair Accessories

We've always been a fan of adding a hair accessory or embellishment to a bride's hairstyle to give it something extra special for the wedding day. Not only does it photograph great in photos, it can also help balance out an updo or add to the theme of the wedding. Whether it's a small hair comb pulling back one side of the hair or a crystal band woven through your updo, we have a selection of bridal hair accessories at Schulz Beauty for you to try on during the trial to see what would look best.

2016 is trending to see an increase in butterflies, either scattered through a loose braid, braided crown or updo. Also an increase in fresh flowers worn in the hair and flower crowns are becoming more popular; this is a great option for relaxed summer wedding.

Despite what's trending, the final decision for your hair should complement your dress, neckline and theme of the wedding. Choose whatever makes you feel best!

Affordable bridal accessory options include Bitter Sweet (Yorkdale & Yorkville) and Etsy; hIgher-end bridal accessory options include Kleinfeld Bridal and Elsa Corsi.

Make Up Forever: Artist Palette Volume 1 (Nudes ) - This convenient eye-shadow palette has 9 must-have Artist Shadow formulas in neutral tones. Personally we think these colours are to die for – highly pigmented, the perfect amount of shimmer, and highly-blendable. You can never go wrong with neutral tones as well! We recommend this palette over the more colourful Volume 2 palette, since it's also great for those new to makeup. Whether you’re creating a chic, natural look or a smoky-bronzed look, this palette will be your go-to and suitable for all skin tones. ($49 CDN at Sephora)

Deborah Lippman: Dressed to the Nines’ Nail Colour Collection – Create the perfect holiday manicure with this set of Deborah Lippman nail polishes. With 9 gorgeous shades in this limited edition collection, you’ll always have a shade to match each season. Stay polished all year round, whether it’s a girls night out in the spring or a romantic winter date night. ($63 CDN Nordstrom)

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Set – Ok this set may not be as realistic of a holiday gift but we had to include this epic lipstick collection called Lips & Boys. With over 10 colour families, this 50-shade set comes with a hefty price tag of $1,950 USD. But, can we just admire the beauty that is Tom Ford lipsticks below? For the record you can totally buy just one of the lipsticks at ($55 at Holts), or divide the mini lipsticks among friends and family for birthdays and holidays year-round.
